SRTA Cosponsors/Supports Area Events

One primary purpose of the SRTA, as defined in its bylaws, is that it “ shall promote sustainable use of the river and work toward the continued stewardship of the river and surrounding watershed in partnership with private individuals, environmental and recreational organizations, and government agencies at local, county, state, and federal levels ”. As such, our membership periodically approves expenditure of resources or provides written endorsement of activities that will have an impact in our river community.

A recent example of this was our contribution to and display at the first annual Environmental Film Festival April 12 at Whitaker Center in Harrisburg. The six film festival was organized by The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay. Respect for our water environment was a main feature of the series.

Another collaborative activity of SRTA is with the Dauphin County Wildlife Rescue, a local, family-operated, wildlife rehabilitation service to which anybody in the region can appeal when they come upon orphaned or injured wildlife. When contacted, Beth or John Carricato will assess the situation and often take the animal back to their facility to provide appropriate care. Chief among their beneficiaries are: birds, mammals and amphibians. Owls, hawks and opossums are among the many hundreds of animals treated and released again. While not asking for donations or assistance in their work, they are faced with rehabilitating the cages and pens they have built to provide this care. SRTA joined other community groups in helping to purchase materials for repair and construction of their facilities.

Boaters that travel the Susquehanna have often reported the excitement of seeing the reappearance of American Bald Eagles flying overhead or fishing. Byers Island, the home of three of our wilderness campsites, is also the home of a nesting pair of eagles for their third season. Log book entries report sightings of many raptors, waterfowl and mammals as well as descriptions of fish caught and uncaught. The Carricatos can be contacted at 717-566-2613.

SRTA also supports tThe annual Kipona Festival, a gala waterfront celebration along the Harrisburg shore of the Susquehanna, which takes place on Labor Day weekend. The Canoe Club of Greater Harrisburg (CCGH) is the organizer of a series of canoe races at the event, raising money to help support their series of water safety and boating skill classes. SRTA sponsors one of the racing boats and also competes in one of the races. We often collaborate with CCGH in cosponsoring events and refer boaters to them for training needs and trip opportunities.
